• Plantar Fasciitis has been an issue for me in the past. The Plantar fascia is the ligament that connects the heal to the toes. When strained it becomes swollen and is painful. It feels as though you have bruised your heel in some deep, dark, place. It hurts to stand or walk. Plantar Fasciitis is an issue for:
  • athletes
  • people who are on their feet for long stretches of time
  • people with high arches
  • people who roll the feet inward when walking or running (a.k.a. excessive pronators)
  • the overweight
  • people with tight calf muscles

There are a few things that can be done to combat plantar fasciitis including:

  • lessening exercise or the amount of time spent standing
  • avoiding running or walking on hard surfaces
  • icing your heel or/and taking ibuprofen
  • replacing shoes regularly with shoes that offer good arch support
  • investing in orthotics or a shoe insert to provide some support
  • surgery, though costly and not always effective

Unfortunately, most of these options are not feasible when preparing for an endurance run. Although plantar fasciitis has not been an issue for me yet, I am constantly expecting it to rear it’s all too familiar head. This week I will be researching some orthotic options to see what’s out there. I’ll keep you posted…
